I bet 90% of girls who went through recruitment sometime in their life remember the moment they were informed about the dress code for formal recruitment weekend. It begins with a sudden gasp, then a glance around the room to see others reactions and finally the feeling of instant stress.
To this day I remember the words “no jeans, no running shoes, no leggings, no flip flops … basically all together NO CASUAL CLOTHES.” With it being the day before recruitment starts, it’s kind of a shock to find out the restrictions of dressing. I immediately thought “I have no cute clothes”. As a formal requirement survivor here are some early pointers and advice on how to dress so you don’t feel as shocked as I did.
A general rule-of-thumb when deciding on outfits for recruitment is each day gets progressively dressier.
Day 1 – Open House
Open House is the first day of recruitment and probably the most casual day of the weekend.
-Feel free to wear a move comfortable outfit this day. Constantly standing and being on your feet all day can be tiring. So don’t be afraid to incorporate some sort of fancy sandal or flat shoe instead of wearing heels.
-As for accessories, wear statement pieces that will differentiate yourself from the others and make you memorable. The current members see about 200 girls each day and it’s hard to remember every single one of them. It’s true that the girl who wears a peacock feather hat (not saying to wear this) will be noticed and remembered more then the girl who has the exact same outfit as every other girl in the house.
Day 2 – Philanthropy Day
The second day is dedicated to each sorority’s philanthropy. Most of the time the sororities will put on a presentation to showcase their charities.
-This day is a little dressier. Usually on this day, girls would wear anything that displays the best versions of themselves. It ranges from dresses, skirts, formal pants and cute accessory pieces. Fancy flat shoes and heels are acceptable for this day as well.
-It’s a day to show off your favourite outfit.
Day 3 – Preference Night
The last day of recruitment is the most fancy. On this day conversations usually get more personal with your final two sororities.
-You should be thinking about wearing a semi-formal dress for this event.
-Basically think about what you would wear to wedding or formal party.
-It’s a very important night in which the girls in each sorority represent themselves and the formal attire entirely sets the special atmosphere.
Last Minute Quick Tips
- Always keep it classy
- No skin-tight outfits or too-high heels (nothing you would wear to the club)
- Think brunch with grandma or a wedding
- Overdress to play it safe
- Blazers are always a yes
- Consider buying insoles if you plan to wear heels all weekend to make the fit more comfy and bearable to stand on
- Don’t be afraid to wear bold pieces that really show your personality
Just make sure to be yourself and wear clothes that make you feel good. Good luck with recruitment ladies!
