Staying Healthy During Exam Time

4/20/2018

It’s everyone’s favourite time of the year. Tuesday nights with friends are replaced with all night study sessions in Weldon. Joggers take the place of your jeans and sweatpants replace your pin attire. Spoke bagels become your new religion. It’s easy to get caught up in the madness of #finalsszn so check out the following tips to stay healthy over the next few weeks:

Physical Health
  • Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if it’s just doing a few laps around Weldon
  • Remember to eat, when studying it’s easy to forget
  • Sleep deprivation is not fun for anyone. Not only does it make you feel like your dragging yourself around all day, but it can also negatively affect your GPA. Remember to get more than 5 hours a night!
    • Having trouble falling asleep anyways? Try to disconnect before bed from all electronic devices. Artificial light can lower your melatonin levels, which is a hormone that controls your sleep and wake regulation cycle.
  • Book that massage! It can relax your fidgety muscle, improve circulation, and relax your mind.
    • Can’t book that massage? Try and practice Reflexology by rolling your foot over a golf ball, to reduce stress levels and raise antioxidant levels.

Mental Health
  • Your sisters will keep you strong
    • People with strong emotional support expressed better cognitive skills in language, verbal and nonverbal memory, abstract reasoning, and spatial ability than without.
  • Its ok to cry girl! An emotional cry releases stress-related chemicals from your system.
  • Breathe in your favorite scents! Certain scents can help you to calm down (lavender, cypress, etc.), remember good memories, and your sisters because the presence of your sisters will nasally sense pheromones to calm you down.
  • If you’re starting to feel alone and reaching out to a sister doesn’t help, there are a ton of helpful resources on and off campus:

Extra Study Tip
  • Create a study schedule - going into exam season without a plan makes your study sessions a lot less productive but having a rough idea of what you need to be reviewing will help you be successful.
