When you have 3 midterms, a philanthropy event, a mixer, a grad school or job search info session, AND your volunteer shift coming up in the same week, exercise may be the LAST thing you’re thinking of adding to your schedule. Here’s why you should make time for sweating this week:
Exercise actually increases your energy levels.
Feeling that 3pm study slump? Take a break from your laptop screen and hit the gym. Though it may seem counterintuitive, expending energy through exercise will increase your energy in the long-run and a regular commitment to exercise will fight ongoing fatigue. Put down the Red Bull, put on the Nikes.
Exercise improves your memory, focus, and cognitive performance.
Studies show that exercise supports the healthy operation of your hippocampus, the part of your brain that controls the formation, retention, and recall of memories. Exercise has also been shown to increase attention scores and test performance in college-level students (that’s you!). Just another reason to make your study breaks sweaty.
Exercise can help to relieve stress & boost your mood.
Regular exercise reduces stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline and produces endorphins that help to boost your mood. Combined with any of your other favourite self-care practices, exercise can play a big role in helping you relieve academic stress.
